Dark War 101: Beginner’s Tips & Tricks

Welcome to Dark War Survival!

Dark War Survival can feel overwhelming at first. There is always another building to upgrade, hero to improve, event to complete, item to claim, or glowing button tempting you to spend something.

You do not need to understand every system immediately.

The most important beginner rule is simple:

Think long-term.

Dark War SURVIVAL rewards players who plan ahead.

The strongest accounts are not always built by the biggest spenders.

They are the ones who save the right items, invest in the correct systems, join the right alliance, and avoid wasting rare resources on short-term excitement.

The 101 and 201 guides will help you build strong habits, understand what deserves your attention, and avoid wasting resources you will need later.

New Player Quick Start

These basic habits will prevent most early mistakes:

  1. Join an active alliance and read its announcements.
  2. Keep your account growing
  3. Factions: Choose a primary faction and build one strong main march
  4. Consume intelligently: Save speedups/RSS boxes and major upgrades for scoring events
  5. Spend smart: Gems/rubies, and dawn badges
  6. Find your focus: Heroes and equipment
  7. Mistakes to avoid and habits to build

You will grow faster by making consistent, efficient decisions than by chasing every temporary increase in Combat Power.

Lets go over these individually so that you can better understand these topics.

1. Join an Active Alliance Early

One of the biggest mistakes a beginner can make is trying to play alone.

A strong alliance gives you:

  • Faster construction and research through Alliance Help
  • Stronger Alliance Tech providing bonuses for nearly every dynamic of the game
  • Better rally rewards
  • More event rewards
  • Protection through server rules and diplomacy
  • Experienced players who can answer questions
  • Access to coordinated events and seasonal objectives

You do not need to be the strongest person in the alliance to be valuable. Activity matters. Contribute to Alliance Chat and the culture of the group. Tap Help. Donate to Alliance Tech. Join rallies. Read alliance notices. Follow rules. Shield when told. Ask questions before spending rare items.

A reliable, active player is always useful.

2. Keep Your Account Growing

Keep Your Queues Moving

Idle queues mean lost progress. Try to keep the following running whenever possible:

  • Construction
  • Research (one of the most important for true power unlock!)
  • Fighter, Shooter, and Rider training
  • Troop conversion
  • Healing when needed

Start long construction and research projects before sleeping or logging off. Use Alliance Help to shorten timers, and check whether useful buffs (see below) are available before beginning upgrades.

You do not need to live in the game. You simply need to develop consistent habits.

Use Buffs Before Upgrades

Before beginning a construction, research, or training timer, check for available bonuses, especially on larger upgrades that are multiple days.

These may include:

  • Capital official appointments (very strong construction, research, and training buffs are available for free!)
  • Gathering Grounds buffs
  • Development-hero passive skills
  • Alliance technology
  • Temporary event bonuses

Small bonuses become much more valuable when applied to upgrades lasting several days.

Development heroes are also important. Some heroes provide passive construction, research, or training bonuses even when they are not part of your combat march. Read hero skills carefully instead of judging heroes only by their CP.

Watchtower Matters — but don't go in blind

Your Watchtower is one of the most important buildings in the game because it gates so many other systems. Higher Watchtower levels unlock higher building levels, higher hero level caps, stronger troops, more research access, and better overall progression.

That does not mean you should blindly upgrade only the Watchtower and ignore everything else.

Before starting a major Watchtower upgrade, make sure your key support buildings are not falling too far behind:

  • Military Center (increases troop capacity per car, thus increasing your combat CP)
  • Main faction Training Camp (unlocking your primary faction's camp as priority)
  • Hospital
  • Research Lab / Library (and Construction Hall/Training Ground occasionally, as well)
  • Required prerequisite building for the next Watchtower level

A good beginner rhythm is:

  1. Check the next Watchtower requirement.
  2. Upgrade the required building.
  3. Keep your main troop and research buildings moving.
  4. Start long upgrades before sleeping or logging off.
  5. Use alliance help and construction buffs before starting large upgrades.

If your Watchtower is high but your troops, hospital, research, and main march are weak, your power number may look better than your actual usefulness.

3. Choosing a Faction: Build One Strong Main March

One of your earliest important decisions is choosing the faction you want to build around. This decision will influence which heroes you prioritize, which troop technology you research, and where you spend many of your rare resources.

There are three primary troop factions:

  • Fighters
  • Shooters
  • Riders

Each faction counters another:

  • Fighters counter Riders
  • Shooters counter Fighters
  • Riders counter Shooters

This creates a rock-paper-scissors system. A properly developed march can defeat an opponent with higher CP when it has the right faction advantage, although hero quality, research, equipment, troop capacity, and other bonuses still matter.

Activating Your Faction Bonus

Deploying at least three heroes from the same faction activates a faction bonus for that formation. In troop battles, using additional heroes from the faction you are building around can also strengthen your counter advantage. A mixed march that does not contain at least three heroes from one faction misses an important source of combat strength.

As a beginner, your goal should generally be to build a march with at least three heroes from your chosen faction. Four or five matching heroes will provide additional synergy.

Do not automatically throw your five highest-CP heroes together. A slightly lower-CP hero who strengthens your entire faction may be more valuable than a higher-CP hero with no useful synergy and passives.

Which Faction Should You Choose?

You can choose based on whichever faction you enjoy most, or make a more strategic decision based on the faction-counter system.

Fighters

Fighters are extremely common because several strong Fighter heroes are accessible early. That makes them a practical and beginner-friendly option, but it also means many opponents will be prepared to counter them.

Shooters

Shooters counter Fighters. Because Fighter marches are so common, Shooters are often considered one of the strongest strategic choices for players who want an advantage against the most frequently encountered faction.

Riders

Riders counter Shooters but are much less common on many servers. They can be extremely useful against Shooter-heavy opponents, although building a competitive Rider march may depend more heavily on which heroes are available during your season.

Exact faction popularity varies by server, season, spending level, and newly released heroes. Reddit claims such as "80% Fighters, 19% Shooters, and 1% Riders" as community estimates rather than official statistics. The important lesson is that Fighters are generally the most common, making Shooters a popular counter-meta choice.

How to Decide

Consider:

  • Which strong heroes you already own
  • Which heroes you can realistically star up
  • Whether you are free-to-play, a low spender, or a larger spender
  • Which faction your alliance currently needs
  • Which troop technology you have already developed
  • Which faction you personally enjoy

Do not completely rebuild your account every time the popular strategy changes. Constantly switching factions can leave all three underdeveloped.

Build One Strong March First

Once you choose a faction, concentrate your best resources into one primary march:

  • Hero shards and stars
  • Skill books
  • Troop-faction research
  • Military research
  • Equipment quality
  • Equipment enhancement and promotion
  • Your highest available troop tier

One powerful march is more useful than three weak marches.

Your first march will carry you through rallies, PvP, territory fights, seasonal events, and many other activities. Begin investing heavily in a second march only after your primary march is well established.

4. Consume Intelligently

Save Speedups for Scoring Events

Speedups are one of the easiest things to waste early.

It is tempting to use them the second you get them, but that usually gives you less value. Many events reward you for using speedups during specific scoring windows. If you use them randomly, you get the upgrade, but you miss the extra event rewards.

A better approach:

  • Use natural timers for normal upgrades when you can.
  • Save large speedup stacks for Alliance Duel, Survival Preparedness, Wasteland King, Capital Clash prep/healing, or other scoring events.
  • Use construction speedups on construction-scoring days.
  • Use research speedups on research-scoring days.
  • Use training speedups on troop-training scoring days.
  • Ask the alliance before burning a huge amount of speedups.

The goal is not to hoard forever. The goal is to spend when your spending gives you progress and rewards.

Protect Your Resources

Do not open resource packs until you are ready to spend them.

Resources stored as inventory items cannot normally be looted. Resources opened and sitting above your protected limit can make you an attractive target.

Good habits include:

  • Keep resource packs unopened.
  • Upgrade your Warehouse when practical.
  • Shield during dangerous PvP periods.
  • Avoid remaining unshielded with excessive exposed resources.
  • Teleport if you are being repeatedly farmed.
  • Ask leadership before retaliating and creating a larger conflict.

Spend Wisdom Medals Intentionally

Wisdom Medals are valuable and should not be scattered across random research.

Alliance Duel research can improve recurring rewards for both you and the alliance. Combat research improves troop capacity, attack, defense, HP, and your primary faction.

Ask leadership about current priorities and understand what each research choice provides before spending a large number of medals.

5. Spend smart: Gems/rubies, and dawn badges

Gems, rubies, dawn badges, and other premium currency should be treated like a limited resource, especially if you are free-to-play or a low spender.

Avoid spending them randomly on small timers, impulse pulls, cosmetics, or convenience purchases. The best value usually comes from things that create long-term account growth.

Good uses often include:

  • Lucky Chest / hero shard events
  • Goodie Bazaar or similar hero-focused events
  • VIP progress, depending on your stage
  • Construction queue unlocks if you do not have the permanent second (or third) queue
  • Training Center unlocks
  • Discounted items that support long-term growth (such as Flash Sales)

Poor uses usually include:

  • Skipping short timers
  • Random hero pulls outside events
  • Buying things just because they are flashing on screen (such as healing speedups or new emotes)
  • Spending because you are bored

Avoid using premium currency simply to skip short timers, make random pulls outside an event, or buy something because it is flashing on the screen.

Before spending, ask: Will this help my account next month, or only make me feel stronger for five minutes?

We have a wonderful F2P (free-to-play) guide that further discusses how to best utilize these important premium currency items.

6. Strengthen your focus: Heroes and equipment

We've "found our focus" by previously selecting your 'primary' faction. What next? Lets invest intelligently.

Focus Your Hero Investment

S-class heroes can increase your march strength dramatically, but they are expensive to unlock, star up, and max. The biggest beginner mistake is spreading fragments, skill books, and gear across too many heroes.

A focused march beats a scattered roster.

Focus on your strongest and most useful three to five heroes first (from the faction we already decided was your primary). Avoid spending rare fragments, skill books, and other resources on every hero simply because they are available.

When evaluating heroes, consider:

  • Faction
  • Passive troop bonuses
  • Army- and march-wide bonuses
  • Tanker or Striker role
  • Exclusive weapon effects
  • Star availability
  • Long-term usefulness

General hero tips:

  • Focus on your best 3–5 heroes first.
  • Do not dump rare resources into filler heroes just because they are available.
  • Look at passives, not just CP. Look for heroes that provide matching faction HP/DEF/Attack passive (skill 3) bonuses and match them to your march.
  • Other development heroes matter too, so don't ignore them: Construction and research passives can save huge amounts of time. This includes heroes where their 3rd skill (passive skill) provides a buff for other elements of the game, such as Barnett's unit training speed increase, Andre and Corleone's research buffs, Eddie's construction buff, etc).
  • You should level your top 5 heroes evenly, as they feed your Training Center

A hero that boosts your whole march is usually more valuable than a hero with a pretty CP number but poor synergy.

Hero Equipment Is a Big Deal

Hero equipment is one of the most important long-term power systems in the game. It is also one of the easiest places to waste shop currency.

If you are still building your first marches, your main shop priority should usually be:

Hero Equipment Choice Chests / Orange Equipment Choice Boxes > Power Cores > Vehicle Modification Parts

Avoid buying random extras from Arena Shop, Combat Shop, or Season Shop until your core heroes have strong gear. Orange gear is a major milestone, and having your first march — then your second march — properly geared will help far more than spreading currency around on less important items.

Simple gear rules:

  • Gear your main march first.
  • Prioritize orange gear.
  • For tanks/frontline heroes, prioritize defensive gear.
  • For damage dealers, prioritize offensive gear.
  • Level gear evenly, both by the "enhanced level" and the "promotion" level.
    • Each item level and promotion provides the exact same flat % for each level. Going from level 1-2 provides the same flat % increase as going from 9-10, only the price increases. Level every item to 1, then all of them to 2, etc. Do NOT level a single item to level 100 with an enhancement of 10 while the rest of them are level 30 at enhancement 2. You are unnecessarily spending Boost Ore and Power Cores.
    • In PvP/rallies (troop battles), hero equipment gets summed into one pool. It doesn't matter who wears what — the total is what matters.
    • Repeating again for those that didn't hear it: Stop micro-managing individual gear slots. Level equipment evenly across 5 heroes. Same total boost, ~40% fewer Power Cores/Boost Ore spent. In hero battles (Adventure/PvE), allocation matters — ATK gear for strikers, DEF for tanks. But in war? It's the pool.
  • You should still place equipment on your 2-4th marches, but avoid spending Boost Ore (enhancing the level) or Power Cores (promoting item) on them save those for your main march only. All heroes benefit from gear, even non-leveled green gear on them is a benefit. Replace their gear with blue/purple/orange when feasible.

Strong gear on your main heroes helps everywhere: PvP, rallies, events, territory fights, and defense.

Vehicle Modifications

Vehicle modifications is also one of the most important long-term power systems in the game. While this is discussed further in the 201 page and other articles, the principals are the same: level evenly.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Spending all speedups the moment you get them
  • Using gems/rubies on random timers
  • Upgrading every hero equally, and not focusing on your top 5
  • Ignoring/improperly leveling hero equipment and vehicle mods, or only leveling up one item in lieu of all equally
  • Chasing CP instead of real combat strength
  • Buying the wrong shop items before your main march has orange gear
  • Opening all resource packs and becoming farmable
  • Ignoring Alliance Help and Alliance Tech
  • Missing alliance mail/announcements and event directions
  • Training troops only when you feel like it
  • Letting research, or any queue for that matter, sit idle
  • Starting fights that hurt the alliance

Most beginner mistakes come from impatience. Slow down, ask questions, and spend with a plan.

Simple Daily Checklist

When you log in, try to do the basics:

  • Tap Alliance Help often (or buy VIP)
  • Donate to Alliance Tech before it hits the max 25 stack
  • Join rallies, and turning on auto-rally
  • Check alliance notices (announcements and mail)
  • Start or continue construction
  • Start or continue research
  • Keep troop training moving
  • Complete radar / daily tasks
  • Gather resources if safe
  • Save major items for event scoring
  • Ask questions before spending rare resources

You do not need to live in the game. Just build good habits.

Final Advice

Dark War Survival is pay-to-win, but smart play still matters. A spender who wastes everything will eventually fall behind a disciplined player who plans around events, builds the right heroes, saves rare items, and works with the alliance.

The choices you make early will affect your account for months.

Think long-term. Build your main march. Save for events. Protect your resources. Follow alliance direction. Ask questions.

And most importantly:

Grow with the alliance, not by yourself.
