STOP! Have you read the DWS 101 page first?
It's recommended to read the 101 page before diving deeper into further game dynamics. If you haven't viewed that page, please stop and review that information first.
The most important beginner rule is simple:
Think long-term.
Advanced Growth, Events, and Smarter Account Planning.
Dark War 101 teaches the basics: join an active alliance, keep queues moving, save important items, build one strong march, and avoid common beginner mistakes.
Dark War 201 is the next step.
This guide is for players who understand the basics but want to make smarter decisions with heroes, gear, vehicles, research, troops, events, and premium currency. At this stage, the goal is not just to increase Combat Power. The goal is to build useful power, spend resources at the right time, and make your account stronger in ways that actually matter.
Dark War Survival rewards players who plan ahead. Events, upgrades, heroes, gear, research, vehicles, and alliance activity all connect. The better you understand those connections, the less you waste — and the faster you grow.
Think of this page as the bridge between basic survival and serious account planning.
1. CP Is Not the Same as Useful Power
Combat Power matters, but it does not tell the full story.
A high-CP account can still perform poorly if the power is scattered, inflated, or invested into the wrong places. A lower-CP player with better research, stronger hero synergy, better equipment, better troop quality, and smarter event habits can often be more useful than someone with a bigger number but weaker planning.
Useful power comes from things that actually help you fight, grow, score, reinforce, recover, and support the alliance.
Useful power includes:
- A strong main march
- Focused vehicle marches
- Good hero passives, with synergy in the same march
- Proper overall faction synergy
- Strong hero equipment
- Properly evenly leveled vehicle modifications
- Military and faction research
- Troop tier and troop depth
- March size and troop capacity
- Smart resource management, both with RSS and uncommon items
- Ability to heal and recover, and properly saving healing speedups for events
- Event preparation
- Alliance participation
CP is a measurement.
Usefulness is how well your account performs when it matters.
A good 201-level mindset is:
Do not ask, “How do I make the number bigger?” Ask, “Will this make my account stronger in the places that matter?”

2. Research Is Real Power
Research is one of the easiest things to underestimate because it does not always feel exciting. It is not as flashy as unlocking a new hero, upgrading gear, or watching your CP jump after a big building upgrade.
But research is real power.
Research improves the systems that make your account stronger every day. It can increase troop stats, training efficiency, march strength, resource production, event scoring, and long-term account performance.
Strong research helps your account in ways that are not always obvious from the outside.
Important research areas usually include:
- Military research not requiring wisdom medals
- Starts with Elite Troops
- When Elite Troops reaches 85%, it unlocks a new Battle tree
- Faction research (unlocks in Industrial age)
- Troop attack and DMG
- Troop defense
- Troop HP
- March size / troop capacity
- Training speed
- Research speed
- Construction efficiency
- Gathering improvements
- Alliance Duel-related research
- Battle Strategy research

Wisdom Medals and other rare research items should be spent carefully. Do not scatter them randomly just because something is available.
Before spending major research materials, ask:
- Does this support my main march?
- Does this improve recurring event scoring?
- Does this help my alliance?
- Is this a long-term bottleneck?
- Would leadership recommend this right now?
- Am I spending because it is smart, or because I am impatient?
Research is slow, but slow power adds up.
Using precious universal speed-ups is recommended to be consumed for research improvements.
Idle research is one of the biggest hidden losses in the game. Keep it moving.
3. What Makes a March Strong?
Dark War 101 teaches you to build one strong march first.
Dark War 201 is where you start understanding why that march is strong.
A good march is not just your five highest-CP heroes thrown together. A strong march is built around synergy, role, faction, passives, skills, equipment, troop support, and research.
When reviewing your march, look at:
- Hero faction
- Hero role (front line defense, back row damage dealer, hybrid role)
- Hero skills
- Passive bonuses (stacking heroes where their passive applies to the troops/heroes in the march)
- March-wide bonuses (stacking heroes where their passive applies to the troops/heroes in the march)
- Troop-specific bonuses (such as research)
- Equipment quality
- Vehicle level and modifications
- Troop tier and troop count
A hero with slightly lower CP may be better than a higher-CP hero if that lower-CP hero provides stronger passives or better synergy for the march.
Your goal is not to create a pretty lineup. Your goal is to create a march that works.

Main March First
Your first march should get the best of your attention first:
- Best heroes
- Best gear
- Most skill book investment
- Most hero shards spent
- Best faction research
- Best vehicle support (faction-specific parts unlock later)
- Best troop focus
A strong first march helps everywhere: rallies, events, arena, PvP, territory fights, defense, and seasonal content.
Your second, third, and fourth marches still matter, but do not weaken your main march by trying to make every march equal too early. One strong march is usually more useful than 3-4 weaker marches.
4. Hero Investment: Stars, Skills, Shards, and Long-Term Value
Heroes are one of the most important investment decisions in the game.
They are also one of the easiest places to waste resources.
A hero can look exciting because they are new, rare, or high CP, but that does not automatically mean they are worth building for your account.
It takes 10 hero fragments to unlock a hero, but once you unlock them, you can still continue to make them more powerful by starring them up. Heroes can go from 0 stars to 5 stars. Each star level increases heroes’ base stats, troop capacity, unlocks new skills, and increases their skill level cap. You can start them up by using fragments for that hero.
If you are a free-to-play player, hero fragments and rubies are your two best friends in the game. Search for them and hoard them like your life depends on it. At the very least, your success in this game does.
Before investing heavily into a hero, consider:
- Does this hero fit my main faction?
- Does this hero support my main march?
- Can I realistically get enough shards to star them up?
- Are their skills actually useful?
- Do they provide march-wide bonuses?
- Do they provide troop-specific bonuses?
- Are they useful long-term?
- Do they require heavy spending to become competitive?
- Am I replacing someone better, or just chasing something shiny?
This tier list can give some good insight into heroes' ratings at a glance.

Hero Priority
The rule of thumb is that a new hero will almost always perform slightly better than an older one. This is true across many pay-to-win games, where new heroes are often made stronger to drive sales.
In Dark War Survival, the base attributes of newer heroes will generally be better than those of older heroes. For instance, Season 4 Rosa has over 100 more attribute points than Season 1 Natasha.
Because of this, it's a good idea to save your Fragments for newer heroes. For example, if you must choose between Megan and Margaret, go with Margaret. Margaret is newer and stronger.
Meanwhile, prioritize heroes with Exclusive Equipment. Season heroes with a small season icon on their portrait can access Exclusive Equipment. Non-season heroes like Evans and Megan don't have access to Exclusive Equipment and will eventually become obsolete (although not ignored, as their developmental passives are still important!).
Exclusive Equipment provides extra stats, such as troop damage and HP, and also unlocks an additional skill. This can significantly increase your formation power. For example, three low-level pieces of Exclusive Equipment can provide over 1.7 million CP. High spenders with four maxed pieces of Exclusive Equipment can gain around 6 million CP.
The only catch is that Exclusive Equipment isn't free. You need to unlock it through bundles, with the cheapest option starting at $5 (Daily Deals). However, once it is unlocked, you can slowly upgrade it using free resources.

Skill Books Matter
Skill books are valuable. Do not waste them across every hero you unlock.
A hero with stars but weak skills may underperform. A hero with useful skills and strong synergy can be more valuable than a hero with a better-looking CP number.
Prioritize skill books for heroes that are part of your real plan.
Heroes with strong passive abilities (3rd skill slot) that add troop-wide faction bonuses to HP, DEF, or ATK should be first priority. After these important passive abilities are focused, their active ability (1st skill slot) should be your next focus, especially if the hero has exclusive equipment unlocked.
The Training Center
The Training Center is your best friend and saves you astronomical amounts of food.
Each hero you put in the training center will have its level increase to the level of your 5 highest level heroes.
So if your top 5 heroes are all level 90 and you put a level 1 hero in the training center, that hero will be level 90 as well. You can unlock additional slots with rubies or by purchasing VIP. The most slots a F2P player can unlock is 10, which is perfect because it means you can spend food only on your team heroes and put your five 2nd team and five 3rd team heroes into the training center.
Hero Reset
If swapping out or placing a character into one of the Training Center slots, ensure they are reset back to level 1. The "Hero Reset" icon in the bottom right corner allows you to reset the hero to level 1 and all food spent on that hero is FULLY REFUNDED to you. You can use that to food to strengthen your top 5 heroes, or to ensure your developmental heroes are at level 40.

Hero Leveling
Leveling your hero is fundamental to your combat power. It increases your hero’s base attack, defense, and troop capacity. These base stats are then multiplicatively enhanced by the percentiles you gain from equipment, tech, vehicle parts, chips etc.
Your main source of food income is going to be from spending your daily energy doing boomers. So make sure you are using your naturally generated energy on rallies each day.
You only want to focus on leveling your 5 main heroes. Your 2nd and 3rd teams will be leveled through the training center. The rest of your heroes aren’t going to see combat so you only want to level them to 30 (at 3 stars) or 40 (at 4 stars) in order to unlock their skills.
Feed them via chest rewards, but show patience
You want to save your food level chests for large milestones. Use the fixed amount chest whenever you would like.
There will always be a bigger fish than you, so it is okay to be a little weaker in the present if it means you will be stronger in the future.
The food level chests give you a scaling amount of food that increases with your watch tower level. Early in the game, your tower level will be increasing pretty regularly. So the longer you wait to open the chest -> the higher your WT level -> the more food you will get out of the item.
Only open the food level chests (the ones based on level) when you feel like your watchtower level will plateau for an extended period of time.

Development Heroes Matter Too
Not every valuable hero is a combat hero.
Some heroes provide development benefits such as construction, research, or training bonuses. These bonuses may not look exciting, but they can save huge amounts of time over weeks and months.
Read hero skills carefully. Do not judge heroes only by combat CP.
5. Equipment and Vehicle Mods: Slow Power That Wins Fights
Hero equipment and vehicle modifications are long-term power systems.
They may not feel as dramatic as unlocking a new hero, but they matter constantly.
Strong gear and vehicle upgrades help your account across all parts of the game.
The biggest mistake is spreading resources too thin.

Equipment Priorities
This is where you’ll see spenders separate themselves from F2P. Early on, hero equipment is the biggest determination of march power. Orange equipment is what you want and extremely challenging to obtain.
As discussed in our 101 page, you can get it through:
- Honor Shop
- Adventure Advancement
- Lucky Equipment chests
- Season Shop
Due to how challenging it is to get these and how important they are, early in the game you only want to spend your honor points on orange equipment chests. If you don’t have enough points to get one that week, save it for the next week. If you have a surplus of points after getting one, save them for next week.
Equipment significantly boosts your power, but it also costs a lot of resources. Orange Equipment is the equipment that you want to level up. There are a few ways to do this:
- Promotion (1) with Power Cores,
- Enhancement (2) with Boost Ores,
- and later breakthroughs.
Boost Ore Enhancement increases base stats and provides a minor percentile multiplier to the two stats of that item. Boost Ore is found from event rewards, the shop, and can be easily gathered in mass by salvaging unused items in the equipment tab.
Power Core Enhancement increases base attribute and equipment CP by 10%, as well as increases troop capacity. Power Core is found from event rewards, the shop, and specials sales. These are much more rare than Boost Ore.
The higher the level, the more it costs.
For example, promoting from level 6 to 7 takes 70 Power Cores, while promoting from level 8 to 9 takes 90. However, both upgrades give the same bonus, such as a 10% boost to base attributes. As the level increases, the upgrade becomes much more expensive.
The smart move is to prioritize your lowest-level upgrades. These are the low-hanging fruit and require the fewest resources to improve. In other words, spread your resources evenly rather than putting all of your resources into one piece of equipment.
When leveling your equipment (either through boost ore enhancement or power core promotion) only level your orange equipment on your first team and level evenly. With boost ores, level evenly the entire way. With power cores, you want to level evenly until everything is at power cores level 7-8.
Once all items on your first march are promoted to level 7 (or 8) you want to take 1 item to breakthrough at a time (more information about breakthroughs below). The first level breakthrough provides more bonuses then just leveling all evenly to level 10 then breakthroughing.
In general:
- Gear your main march first.
- Prioritize stronger equipment quality (don't go crazy on leveling up purple quality equipment, just enough to hold you over).
- Level gear evenly.
- Do not over-invest in one piece while ignoring everything else.
- For frontline/tank heroes, defensive gear usually matters more (game modes like adventure).
- For damage heroes, offensive gear usually matters more (game modes like adventure).
- Avoid wasting currency on random extras before your core heroes are properly geared.
Equipment is a long-term system. Treat it like one.

DX Blueprints: Equipment Breakthrough
DX Blueprints are a late-game equipment resource used after orange gear has reached promotion level 10, allowing you to push that equipment into the next tier of progression and into red equipment.
They may not feel immediately useful when your gear is still developing, but they become a major bottleneck later because large quantities are needed across multiple pieces of equipment. Community players commonly recommend prioritizing Power Cores and Precision Parts first when your gear still needs them, then collecting DX Blueprints whenever good opportunities appear so you are not stuck waiting once your equipment reaches that stage.
Beginner takeaway: If DX Blueprints appear as an event reward, exchange option, or other good-value opportunity, do not overlook them just because you cannot use them yet. Future you will be very glad you saved them.
Vehicle Modifications
Vehicle modifications are another important power system that players often treat casually.
The principle is similar to hero gear: do not scatter upgrades randomly. Level each of the 6 vehicle parts evenly; Although, I find I focus on the top row (Troop ATK/DEF in Siege Attacks) first.
Focus on vehicle upgrades that support your main march and long-term strength. Leveling evenly is usually better than dumping everything into one spot while the rest of the vehicle is ignored.
Aim to complete a "set" (all matching color tier) before focusing on one particular part.

6. Watchtower Pushes: Plan Before You Upgrade
Your Watchtower is important. It unlocks major account progression and opens the door to stronger systems, buildings, troops, heroes, and development.
But Dark War 201 is not about blindly pushing Watchtower as fast as possible.
A rushed Watchtower can make your account look stronger than it actually is if your support systems are weak.
Before a major Watchtower push, ask:
- Are the required buildings ready, or would I have to rush to get them up?
- Is my research center, or library, falling behind?
- Is my hospital keeping up?
- Do I have enough resources?
- Am I being mindful of my resource-generating buildings falling too far behind?
- Can I time the upgrade with an event?
- Do I have construction buffs (Emergency Project) available?
- Am I upgrading because it helps, or because I want the CP jump?
A Watchtower upgrade is best when it is part of a plan.
Do not just start it because the button is available.

Industrial age
Once the Watchtower reaches level 30, survivors can use Precision Parts to upgrade most in-shelter buildings for additional effects.
Reaching Watchtower Level 30 is exciting, but do not let the push toward Industrial Age leave the rest of your base badly behind.
Before committing heavily to Industrial upgrades, take some time to strengthen the buildings that directly affect your combat effectiveness. Ideally, your Training Camps and Military Center should already be Level 30, and your Hospital, Alliance Plaza, and Research Center should be at or very near Level 30 as well.
Why? Your Watchtower level by itself does not make your army strong. Your Military Center affects how many troops you can bring into battle, your camps determine troop progression and eventually receive important Industrial combat bonuses, your Hospital protects more of your troops during heavy fighting, and your Research Center unlocks major late-game research.
You do not need every minor building completely maxed before advancing, but your core military infrastructure should not be several levels behind your Watchtower. Industrial Age becomes increasingly resource-intensive, especially once Precision Parts enter the equation, so fixing neglected Level 20-something buildings later can become an annoying distraction from your Industrial progression.
Good rule of thumb: Before making Industrial Age your primary focus, make sure your base actually looks and performs like a Level 30 account — not just your Watchtower.
Each upgrade to industry level requires 5 building level-ups (often referred to as "bubbles"). Every level-up enhances the building's effects, which can be viewed in the building details.
Industrial Age movement: Watchtower (obviously) -> Main Faction training center -> Alliance Plaza -> Research (only to I1) -> Alliance Hall / additional requirements for new WT level -> Repeat.
Avoid upgrading other buildings like your Hospital or Military Center to Industrial age until you've hit the industrial cap for your season and have all your troops to the max available Industry level. Precision Parts are rare and expensive, and should be properly invested.
7. Buff Timing and Long Upgrade Windows
Buffs matter more than players realize.
A small percentage bonus may not feel exciting on a short upgrade, but it can become very valuable on upgrades that take days.
Before starting major construction, research, or training, check for available bonuses.
These may include:
Useful examples include:
-
Capital Official Appointments
-
Before Troop Training: Supreme General / Secretary of Security: 10% Training Speed buff
-
Before Starting Research: Secretary of Science: 15% Research speed buff, +1 Hour shortened research completion time
-
Before Starting Construction: Secretary of Construction: 15% Construction speed buff, +1 Hour shortened research completion time (tip: stack this with the 'Emergency Project' buff from Gathering Grounds before starting multi-day construction projects!)
- Before Sending out Gatherers: Secretary of Agriculture: 35% Gathering speed buff
-
-
Gathering Grounds 'Emergency Project' buff: 20% Construction speed buff (stack with Capital buff)
-
Development heroes with construction or research passives (such as Megan, Quinn, Corleone, Barnett, Andre, Eddie)
This matters more as upgrade timers get longer. A small percentage reduction on a short timer is not a huge deal. A small percentage reduction on a multi-day upgrade can save a lot.
Other important buffs include:
- Alliance technology
- Development hero passives (don't forget these guys!)
- Temporary event bonuses
- Research bonuses
The longer the timer, the more valuable the buff.
A simple habit:
- Check if the upgrade is large.
- Check if a buff is available.
- Check if the action scores in an event.
- Then start the timer.
Do not waste buffs on tiny upgrades if a major one is waiting.
Before starting or finishing a large construction or research project, check whether you can stack useful buffs.

8. Troop Management and Combat Readiness
Troops are not just a number. They are your ability to fight, reinforce, rally, defend, and participate.
Keep troop training moving whenever possible.
Troop management includes:
- Training consistently
- Upgrading troop tiers
- Upgrade lower tiers before training new ones, at least until you have enough of your highest tier to fill a march
- Converting lower troops when appropriate
- Via Military Center - I like to have 2x of my main faction's troops so that as they are knocked out I still have the ability to be competitive.
- Healing after fights and events
- Watching hospital capacity
- Not entering combat unprepared
- Avoiding unnecessary troop losses
Higher-tier troops, better research, stronger march size, and better hero synergy all combine to create real combat strength.
Before combat-heavy events, ask:
- Are my troops healed?
- Are my hospitals clear?
- Do I have healing speedups?
- Do I have enough troops to fill marches?
- Am I shielded if needed?
- Am I exposing too many resources?
- Have I read alliance instructions?
Being war-ready is not just about wanting to fight.
It is about being prepared to fight without damaging your account or the alliance.

13. Zombie Siege: Reinforce Early, Watch Carefully
Zombie Siege is not just about your own base. You can earn points and help the alliance by reinforcing other members. There are multiple ways to best maximize your points here.
A strong strategy is:
- Ensure your defense teams match your marches/vehicle (city gate building under “garrison”).
- Reinforce nearby allies during the early and middle waves.
- A strategy we use is sending out all 4 marches while having someone else reinforcing you.
- The first 12-14 waves are trivial, and having a single ally reinforcing you will allow you to maximize your points by having all 4 of your marches out.
- Try to only reinforce watch towers that do not have other players also reinforcing. Multiple individuals reinforcing have to share the points.
- Watch the zombie strength as waves increase. Wave 15, the first "elite" boss, is typically the first challenging wave.
- Pull troops back before your own base starts failing.
- Heal between waves if needed, then send your reinforcements back out.
- Ask for help if you are close to burning.
- Once you are knocked out, reinforce someone who can still survive.
Do not go AFK without checking your base. Reinforcing is helpful, but losing your own base too early hurts your rewards.
The goal is to help as many members survive as deep into the event as possible.
14. Catherine’s Party: Do Not Waste Guns for Tiny Rewards
Catherine’s Party comes around regularly. The rewards usually improve at certain milestone levels.
Instead of spending every gun immediately for small rewards, consider stopping at a milestone, such as level 5 or 10, and saving the rest for the next time the event returns. Bigger milestone rewards are often better than pushing awkwardly and stopping short.
This is a great way to hoard up on Titanium Alloy for vehicle upgrades.
Beginner rule:
Do not spend event items just because you have them. Check the next reward milestone first.
Final Advice
Dark War Survival is pay-to-win, but smart play still matters. A spender who wastes everything will eventually fall behind a disciplined player who plans around events, builds the right heroes, saves rare items, and works with the alliance.
The choices you make early will affect your account for months.
Think long-term. Build your main march. Save for events. Protect your resources. Follow alliance direction. Ask questions.
And most importantly:
Grow with the alliance, not by yourself.
